There are lots of ways in which we can cut down on what we throw away. So, whether we're recycling, finding new uses for 'junk' or simply reducing what we create in the first place, with a little effort, we can all make our homes cleaner and greener!
Here are some simple ideas of how to reduce at home:
- When you go shopping choose refills for products that offer them e.g. fabric
conditioner, air fresheners, this will help to reduce the amount of rubbish you produce; - Ditch cling film and foil and store food in re-sealable containers instead;
- Buy milk in returnable glass bottles, instead of plastic bottles;
- Invest in rechargeable batteries to reduce rubbish and save cash;
- Choose re-useable varieties of goods such as nappies and hankies, rather than
disposable ones. Contact the All Wales Real Nappy Advice Line – 0845 456 2477, for more information about Real nappies and to find your nearest cloth nappy agent; - Take unwanted clothes and household items to charity shops or jumble sales;
- Wash bottles and jars before taking them to recycle, or better still, re-use them as they are;
- If you don’t have a garden where you can recycle your organic waste, find out if there’s a communal scheme you can be involved in.
Do you really need it?
Ask yourself this question next time you go shopping. Can you reuse or repair what you’ve got, can you buy recycled? Buying recycled products will help stimulate markets for materials collected from your local recycling banks. Choosing to buy recycled will mean less rubbish goes to the tip.
