Love Food Hate Waste

What a waste!Love Food Hate Waste logo

In Wales we throw away a staggering 410,000 tonnes of food and drink each year.

Some of this waste is made up of things like peelings, cores and bones, but the majority is, or once was, perfectly good food that should have been eaten.

That’s why Waste Awareness Wales is promoting the "Love Food Hate Waste / Hoffi Bwyd Casáu Gwastraff" campaign to help reduce the amount of good food that is being thrown away by households across the country.

What’s the problem?

Aside from the obvious waste of resources and money, if this food waste ends up in landfill it decomposes and produces powerful greenhouse gases.

90% of us just don’t realise how much good food we throw out.

Current research suggests that about 40% (by weight) of the food thrown away that could have been eaten is fresh fruit & vegetables.
