Home Composting
"Why do I need to compost when my waste will break down in landfill anyway?"
When waste is sent to landfill, air cannot get to the organic green waste. Therefore as the waste breaks down it creates a harmful greenhouse gas, methane, which damages the Earth's atmosphere. However, when this same waste is composted above ground at home, oxygen helps the waste to decompose aerobically which means no methane is produced, which is good news for the planet. And what's more, after nine to twelve months, you get a free fertiliser for your garden and plant pots to keep them looking beautiful.
What about composting food waste?
It is possible to compost food waste such as vegetable peelings, apple cores, tea bags and egg shells in your garden. However there are more sustainable options to treat this type of waste and recover valuable energy from it.
Like the green waste if buried in landfill this food waste creates methane. Methane, when captured, can be used to produce heat and electricity.

This food waste will then be taken to special waste treatment facility such as an Anaerobic Digester (AD). AD technology uses natural bacteria to break down food waste in the absence of oxygen. This produces a biogas that can be used to create heat and electricity.
