Garden Waste

14% of our rubbish is organic garden waste.

If sent to landfill, it will release methane, which is twenty three times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Luckily, around 95% of local authorities in the UK collect garden waste for composting.

When it arrives at the composting site, anything that can’t be composted is removed and the garden waste is shredded and laid out into a long pile to decompose.

The compost is turned frequently to provide micro-organisms with oxygen. This speeds up the composting process.

During this time, the waste reaches temperatures of around sixty degrees C, which kills off any harmful microbes, weeds and plant diseases.

Once it's completely broken down, the compost can be used in agriculture or as soil conditioner in household gardens.

Alternatively, garden waste can be composted at home by mixing it with other organic waste such as veg peelings and cereal boxes.

Contact your local council to see if they are offering reduced price compost bins.
