Packaging
As well as recycling, reducing your packaging is a great way of cutting down on the amount of waste you produce in the first place. It is always good to substitute non-recyclable purchases for packing that can be placed in your recycling bin or taken to your nearest bring bank.

In the office:
There are lots of things you can do to reduce waste in the office. Try these simple tips:
- Buy your milk in returnable bottles.
- Persuade sandwich makers to use less packaging if you regularly order buffet meals. Or why not ask your caterers to provide you with china plates and cutlery to reduce on waste.
- When you provide tea and coffee refreshments at meetings try to reduce waste and save money by ditching disposable milk portions and sugar sachets by providing sugar in a bowl and milk in a jug! Provide water in a jug from a drinking water source rather than buying bottles of water every time.
- By returning your empty inkjet and laser print cartridges to be refilled you can save both waste and money, contact your current supplier to see if they offer a refill service.
At School:
Packed lunches often mean crisps, biscuits and lots of rubbish! But it’s really easy to cut down on lunchtime rubbish by choosing something that’s reusable or recyclable instead.
For example:
- Try using a flask or bottle for drinks instead of a carton;
- Place your sandwiches in a reusable lunch box and avoid wrapping them;
- Take packaging-free fruit instead of packaging-heavy biscuits and crisps.
At the shops:
- Buy your fruit and vegetables loose. This will cut down on needless packaging.
- Use reusable bags to carry your shopping home.
