Buy recycled

The recycling process is not complete until collected recyclable materials have been made into new products and purchased.

Recycled glass containersYour recyclables could become the materials manufacturers use to produce new items. A wide variety of products are available with recycled content: newspapers, envelopes, writing paper, steel products, compost bins, and motor oil are every day products you would find. For example newspapers are recycled in to new high quality newsprint, packaging materials or innovative products such as thermal insulation. Aluminium drink cans are recycled into new cans and every steel can contain at least 25% recycled material.

Recycled products are everywhere. Places to look include grocery stores or supermarkets, DIY shops, garden centres, stationers, printers, pharmacy/chemists, garages, whole-food shops, gift and department stores.

Buy ‘recycled’ when you shop: Many recycled products are now available that have been made from materials recovered from what was previously treated as rubbish and sent to landfill sites! Most cereal boxes, cans, and glass bottles have a recycled content.

Here are just a few of the reasons why buying recycled products makes a difference:-

  • They are as good as products made from virgin materials;
  • You will help reduce the amount of materials sent to landfill, thus saving resources, energy;
  • You will be helping to boost the market for recycled items, increasing the demand for recyclable items to be collected, and creating jobs potentially in your area;
  • Many supermarkets now stock 100% recycled products including stationery, toilet rolls and bin liners so check the label to make sure that what you’re buying is made from recycled materials;
  • Check the garments you buy for their recycled content. This should be stated on the label, but not all companies currently advertise the recycled content.
