Key facts
The main stats below are from The Welsh Assembly Government’s Municipal Waste Management Report for Wales, 2008-09.
- The total amount of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) produced in Wales has continued to fall over the last 4 years, with just over 1.7 million tonnes produced in 2008-09.
- The percentage of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) reused, recycled or composted in Wales has been continually increasing since 2000-01. Furthermore the 2008-09 rate of 37 per cent is more than five times higher than the 2000-01 rate of 7 per cent. This is great news however, we still need your help to reduce, reuse recycle and recover more of your waste.
- Whilst landfill is still the main form of management of municipal waste, the use of landfill sites has been steadily decreasing over the last 7 years.
- The total amount of recycling and composting in terms of the amount of material managed has increased from 123,493 tonnes in Q4 2007-08 to 132,319 tonnes for Q4 2008-09. This represents an increase of 8,826 tonnes for the quarter.
- During Q4 2008-09 the residual household waste (black bag waste) in Wales was on average 75 kilograms per person; this is compared to 85 kilograms per person for the same period in 2007-08.
Wales has set itself targets to divert 70 per cent of its waste from landfill sites by 2024/25. We can only do this with your help to get us there.
