FAQs

faqiconHow much rubbish does Wales recycle?

FAQ answer

In 2002-03 the average percentage of household waste that was recycled or composted by Welsh Councils as a whole was just 12.6 per cent, this rose to 17.6 per cent in 2003-2004. Despite this increase, Wales still faces a significant challenge in reaching the national recycling target of 40% by 2010. It is important that we all support our Council waste teams and recycle as much as we can. Recent figures show that the rates for municipal waste in Wales being recycled or composted has risen from 23 per cent in 2005-06 to 27.6 per cent in 2006-07.

faqiconHow do I know what I can recycle?

FAQ answer

60% of your household waste can be recycled, and some materials are easier to recycle than others; the most common types of recyclable material found in your bin are paper, glass, metal and plastic. Other recyclable materials include fabric and organic waste such as vegetable peelings. Waste such as garden chemicals, old fluorescent tubes and old batteries are not as easy to recycle and should be disposed of at your council Civic Amenity site. Contact your Council Waste Team for advice on what they collect for recycling.

faqiconHow do I know my recycled material is actually being recycled?

FAQ answer

The National Assembly has set strict recycling targets for each of the 22 Welsh councils to meet; as such it wouldn’t be of benefit to them to landfill the recyclables they have collected. Why not ask the Recycling Officer at your Local Council how the collected materials are recycled?
