25 Feb 2009

Waste Awareness Wales has today re-launched its online recycling bank locator making it even easier for people in Wales to get information on how to reuse and recycle a wide range of household items locally.

bank & reuse locator for Wales - screen displayUsing interactive Google-mapping technology, the updated database is the first of its kind to list local recycling facilities, reuse organisations and charities able to accept specified items.

For people unsure of what can be reused or recycled, the new online search facility also provides a comprehensive list of materials using user-friendly icons.  From half-used tins of paint, outdated computer kit and unwanted furniture to old curtains, carpets and bedding, this database includes it all.

This new database aims to incorporate every Welsh local authority’s recycling banks, household waste recycling centres, together with all Cylch (Wales Community Recycling Network) reuse and recycling organisations across Wales.  Local authorities and community groups have the flexibility to amend and update their information to keep the database up to date.

Dr Tim Peppin, spokesperson for Waste Awareness Wales said: "Now people can access local information on what and where household items can be reused or recycled at the click of a button, thus making it easier for people to do their bit.  This new search facility also makes it easier for local authorities and community groups to disseminate information and should help bring Wales closer to achieving its recycling target of 70% of annual municipal waste by 2024/25."

Ruth Llewelyn of Cylch added: "How often have you asked, where can I recycle this?  We now have the answer – find out online.  The website will be particularly useful for unusual items.  People are always surprised by the range of items that can be re-used by local social enterprises and I would say - have a look at this site before throwing out stuff that might be of use to someone else."
