9 Jun 2008

Have a tree-mendous Fathers Day - dad Sion Ashley-Jones with Owain Kaelin Jones, aged 4With Father’s Day (15 June) just around the corner, Waste Awareness Wales is urging us to think further than ties and socks, and instead consider a gift that’s unique and waste-free.

Waste Awareness Wales, the campaign that encourages people to reduce, reuse and recycle, has come up with a list of top suggestions for the ultimate Father’s Day gift that will treat hardworking dads and at the same time, reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill the day after.

Gwenan Davies from Waste Awareness Wales, said, "Father’s day is the perfect excuse to spoil fathers and give them a bit of extra attention.

"However, with the gifts that dads across Wales receive on Father’s Day, there is often a lot of waste that follows.

"As we all know, we need to reduce the amount of waste we throw away in Wales, so we’ve put together gift ideas to thank our dads for all their work as well as making this Father’s day the greenest ever."

Here are the top five tips from Waste Awareness Wales to keep fathers happy while helping to reduce the amount of waste heading to landfill:

1. Sports day

Instead of another tie or a pair of socks - take your dad out for a day of sports at your local sports centre or park. From golf to football, these gifts are great fun and involve no waste at all.

2. Kitchen Capers

Instead of buying a cake, head to the kitchen and get the children involved in a spot of baking. Not only are you cutting down on packaging, but home-made gifts are economical AND more special for dads with a personal touch.

3. Can crushing

It may sound a bit odd, but what about a can crusher? It’s a good stress-buster and by crushing the cans, you can fit more items into your recycling container.

4. Cards, cards, cards

Using materials around the home to make a special homemade card is a brilliant idea. If it’s a fantastic card you’re looking for, nothing’s surer than a homemade one for your dad.

5. Name a tree

What a better way to help the environment than to plant a tree in the name of your dad. Whether you do it at home or buy a package, it’s a gift he’ll love because he’s helping the environment without having to do anything! Plus it will be something to be appreciated for years to come, instead of another pair of socks for the drawer!
