Waste Awareness Wales is encouraging consumers to recycle "just one more thing" as part of this year’s Recycle Week in June.

The week, starting on 2 June, will see local authorities across the UK plan activities and events to demonstrate just how many everyday items, from food cans and magazines to newspapers and glass jars, can be recycled but are sometimes overlooked and get thrown away with the rest of our rubbish.

Events have been planned across Wales to help people learn what items they could recycled, from setting up information posts in shopping centres and stalls at public events, to handing out cloth bags and holding educational events in schools.

Gwenan Davies, development officer for Waste Awareness Wales, said:

"Over recent years there has been a change in people’s behaviour and with green issues now more at the forefront of people’s minds, many of us are taking steps to live our lives in a more environmentally-friendly way. Recycling is one of the most practical and convenient things we can all do to protect our environment and Recycle Week aims to inspire everyone to do their bit.

"Wales has already experienced significant growth in recycling rates – in 2006/07 we recycled or composted 27.6% of our waste - and while this is encouraging, there is a lot more that we can do.

"Recycle Week is a perfect opportunity to ask people to look for just one more thing that they can recycle – whether it’s remembering to recycle items from upstairs as well as downstairs or making sure they recycle glass jars as well as glass bottles."
