Minister supports Waste Awareness Wales campaign

11 Dec 2007

Mari-Ann Bull & Jane Davidson AMThe Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing today (11 December) visited Ysgol y Berllan Deg in Cardiff, one of the latest Eco-schools in Wales to be awarded the highest environmental rating, and home to the star of Waste Awareness Wales’ latest advertising campaign.

Jane Davidson visited the school to show her support for the new campaign, which for the first time sees Waste Awareness Wales draw the link between reducing, reusing and recycling our waste and how this can help tackle climate change.

The seven year old star of the new campaign, pupil Mari-Ann Bull showed the Minister some of the environmental policies which have earned the school its green flag award – the highest rating an Eco-school can gain. Factors that earned the school this rating included the whole school’s enthusiasm for Eco-Schools, and the level of staff and pupil involvement with environmental issues raised by the programme. In particular, the good examples of global citizenship and the impressive Eco-Noticeboard were commended. They were also awarded a Grade A for being litter free.

Ms Davidson said: "As a nation we are using three planets worth of the earth’s resources so it is essential that we all recycle Click here to view Waste Awareness Wales advertmore. Waste reduction is key to fighting climate change. Reducing waste at source, and increasing the proportion that is recycled, is good for the planet and it’s good for Wales"

Councillor Richard Parry-Hughes, chairperson of Waste Awareness Wales added:

"Our advertising campaigns have always focussed on the impact our actions have on future generations, so to have the minister visit this primary school to show her support brings it home how important it is to act now.

"There are so many simple lifestyle changes we can make to help reduce our impact on the earth for future generations – for example recycling just one glass bottle can save enough energy to power a light bulb for almost an hour."
