Bob Geldof Tops Poll Of Wales’ Greatest Recycling Role Model

Bob Geldof has been voted by the people of Wales as the ‘greenest’ celebrity, according to results of a new poll. Prince Charles, Sting, Al Gore and Chris Martin were also named as green ambassadors as part of the research carried out to mark Recycle Week (2-8 June).
The research also revealed that many of us are taking a leaf out of these celebrities’ books, with 85% of people saying they are now recycling at home. Only four in ten people in Wales claim they feel guilty for not doing enough to protect the environment. For those plagued by ‘green guilt’, throwing food away was the main cause of this feeling, followed by leaving electrical appliances on for longer than necessary and using too many plastic bags.
Anna Richards, Manager of Waste Awareness Wales commented: "From celebrities to politicians and supermarkets to manufacturers, going green has never been so talked about. As the research indicates, green issues are now much more at the forefront of people’s minds. Recycling is one of the most practical and convenient things we can all do to protect our environment. Recycle Week aims to inspire everyone to do their bit.
"We can all make a difference by changing the way we do things, so that we reduce, reuse and recycle rather than just throwing away. Wales has already experienced significant growth in recycling rates. Continuing to make small changes to our behaviour will help us rise to the challenge of further improving our recycling performance, ultimately helping Wales work towards hitting our national recycling and composting target of 40% by 2009/10."
Recycle Week is part of a wider national (UK) campaign aimed at encouraging people to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste. This year, Recycle Week coincides with NHS Environment Week in Wales (4-8 June) and also World Environment Day (Tuesday 5 June) - campaigns also supported by Waste Awareness Wales.
